A still intact piece of history from 1100
Tasso Castle is located in Freienfeld/Campo di Trens, near the town of Sterzing/Vipiteno and is one of the most important castles in South Tyrol. Mentioned for the first time in some documents dating back to the 1100, this fortress was, at that time, feud of the Bavarian counts Lechsgmünd. Historians say that Tasso Castle has never been invaded nor destroyed and that the reason why it is still intact and is worth a visit of its kitchen, the soldiers’ sleeping quarter, the portico, the dungeons, the torture instruments, the Capitals Room, the frescoes and the decorations of the Green Chamber. To the castle belongs even the small chapel dedicated to San Zeno, where have been found some Bavarian caskets from the 4th and the 8th centuries.
